Press Release

This exhibition is about related but different approaches to the use of collage.

Kiera Bennett makes small paper collage pictures by cutting up images from magazines. Her work has a quirky material quality as a result of the collage process. The picture’s definition is equally unusual as a result of the tension between the surface of the collage and the spatial tension of the picture.

Jake Clarke uses collage as source material to develop paintings. Often taking images from 1950’s household magazines that imply a ‘new world’ or attitude to post World War Two living, the incongruousness of his new cut-up world lends itself to the medium of painting. The images combine abstract and figurative passages.

Recycling captured stills from panned video shots, Jocelyn Clarke’s paintings bring into focus ordinary things that are rarely noticed in the home. The stills are cut from their place of origin and then integrated as shapes to draw attention to the edges and boundaries of the painting. The apparent abstract nature of her world is questioned by the weave of fine lines which articulate a figurative space and narrative.
