LONE RANGER | 24 October - 22 November 2003
press | show
New paintings by Jake Clarke, George Doneo, Paul Housely, Peter Jones, Miho Sato, Neal Tait, Joel Tomlin

The painters in this exhibition have made new work in response to a selection of drawings taken from the 'The Lone Ranger Colouring–in Book' (published in America in 1959).

Acting as a starting point and or source material, the line drawings of the Lone Ranger provide a basic template for painting, an opportunity to develop narrative in painting, and a curatorial framework to examine and contrast picture-making in current painting practise.

Background

The Lone Ranger was a popular radio, television, and film serial character during the 1960's, and to some extent an icon for morality in a lawless world:

"I've been doing a lot of thinking" the Ranger says, "I'm going to devote my life to ridding the west of outlaws, but I'll need a disguise of some kind. I don't want anyone to know who I am".
